Review: 'Another Wolfcop' is the sequel we need right now

Everyone knows my disdain for most sequels and reboots, but every now and then one will actually surpass the original in terms of quality. I'm talking about classics such as The Godfather Part II, The Empire Strikes Back and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

I am happy to report that we have another sequel to add to this list. While it's not a knock on the original film, Another Wolfcop is indeed a better film than its predecessor. Of course, I might just be biased with my unabashed love for anything involving Kevin Smith, but I'm willing to bet that I won't be the only to come to this conclusion.

Another Wolfcop is a follow-up to 2014's Wolfcop in which local cop Lou Garou is unwittingly transformed into a werewolf by power-hungry alien cultists. In this installment, Lou is back and his beat, the anonymous Woodhaven, is crazier than ever so the Wolfcop is back on the case to stop a nefarious entrepreneur intent on taking over the world because isn't everyone?

As you can tell from the trailer, this movie is less about the plot and more about drinking, hockey, and random lycanthropic hookups. These are all things that are in my wheelhouse so even without Kevin Smith's involvement, I would be all over this film.

Another Wolfcop is not going to win any Oscars, but not all films have to be serious. The strength in the Wolfcop brand is that much like its high-profile cast addition, it knows what it is and doesn't try to be something that it's not. The films are low-budget horror creations that will remind you of the height of Troma films. They also poke fun at the odd little subgenre of cop films from the late 1980s such as Cobra and Robocop.

Thanks to my parents' subscription to HBO, I spent a great deal of time during my formative years watching these type of films, so I find great humor in their parody. The Wolfcop series will make you laugh if you let it, but only if you check your brain at the door. No one would ever argue that Attack of the Killer Tomatoes or Killer Klowns from Outer Space are highbrow works of art, but that doesn't stop us from laughing each time we watch them.

The aforementioned Kevin Smith deserves recognition for his small role in which he ditches his Silent Bob persona for a rare talking role in which he basically plays a caricature of Kevin Smith. He has recently regaled listeners of his podcast of the piece of advice that recently deceased editor Anne Coates once gave him. She told him that he needs to act more and after watching Another Wolfcop, I couldn't agree more. He has a keen sense of humor that he has sharpened from the director's chair, but it is time for him to put it to good use.

Another actor whose performance in Another Wolfcop was exemplary is Jonathan Cherry. I first really noticed him in as the crazy goalie in the Goon films. I mean, I'm also a goalie, so it makes sense. He really brings new life to sidekick Willie both literally and figuratively. His subtle sense of humor is starting to blossom and I hope that we get to see him in more mainstream films in the near future.

You either get Another Wolfcop or you don't. The films have a sizeable fan base and if you check your brain at the door, you are bound to have a nice experience. Is it silly and dumb? Of course, it is, but that's sort of the point. In a more mainstream sense, the Super Troopers films have taken this same irreverence and turned into a successful model. If you don't mind getting a bit hairy, you will love Another Wolfcop.
