When romantic help is needed, of course, you should turn to the French — just beware of the "wisdom" doled out by pretentious French directors. That's what some romantically challenged Londoners discover in the delightful culture-clash comedy FRENCH FILM. Freelance writer Jed (Hugh Bonneville, Iris, Notting Hill, Scenes of a Sexual Nature) and magazine editor Cheryl (Victoria Hamilton, Scoop) have been in a comfortable and unexciting relationship for 10 years. But things come to a head when Jed decides at long last to propose to Cheryl — and she, to his great shock and dismay, says no! Meanwhile, Jed's friend Marcus (Douglas Henshall, Dorian Gray, Primeval, Angels and Insects) is stuck in the doldrums with his alluring girlfriend Sophie (Anne-Marie Duff, Nowhere Boy, The Virgin Queen, The Magdalene Sisters) and is anxious to heat things up.
