U.S. Revenue Agent Frank Long knows that good ol' boy Son Martin has brewed up barrels and barrels of premium corn liquor, and Long also knows precisely what he needs to do: get those barrels of booze for himself so that he can make a fat Depression-era profit. Long's crooked gambit sets in motion the exploitation-pic guilty pleasures and vicious death dealing of The Moonshine War, scripted by Elmore Leonard (Get Shorty) from his novel. Alan Alda (M *A *5 *H) plays easy-going Son, who has a lot more gristle and smarts than some folks give him credit for. Patrick McGoohan (Braveheart) plays the revenuer whose simple plan ends up being anything but. Richard Widmark (judgment at Nuremberg) plays "Doc," a snaky dentist-turned-hired killer who comes up with his own duplicitous scheme. And Lee Hazlewood, writer of the #1 hit tune "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," plays Doc's gleefully malevolent kept criminal.

Rated PG.
