Tom and Katie expecting their first child

Dawson's bound to be miffed. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are expecting their first child according to People magazine and Cruise's spokeswoman Anne DeVette.

"Tom and Katie are very excited, and the entire family is very excited," DeVette said. The unlikely couple started dating in April and got engaged in June. At first, naysayers dismissed the courtship as nothing more than an elaborate marketing ploy since both had high profile Summer movies coming out (Batman Begins for Holmes and War of the Worlds for Cruise), but this development would seem to squash that idea.

The child will be the first for Holmes and the third for Cruise, who adopted two children with ex-wife Nicole Kidman. Tom is currently filming Mission: Impossible 3 in Virginia.
