Walk Hard: a tale of two trailers

This weekend packed movie houses across the country will be overflowing with laughter from the latest movie creation from Judd Apatow, Superbad. Considering that Mr. Apatow's resume already includes Knocked Up, The 40 Year-Old Virgin and Talladega Nights, the bar has been set high.

If the early reviews are any indication, Superbad should be another jewel in the Apatow crown. It's his next film that has critics concerned. Sure, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story doesn't hit theaters until December, but the first trailer is set to debut this weekend in front of Superbad.

Normally, this wouldn't be newsworthy, but the reason critics are sheepish about Walk Hard is that the trailer that played at Comic Con a few weeks ago failed to light the fires of excitement. In fact, it was widely panned over the 'Net and people started to whisper the B word (bomb).

Well, it looks like Apatow and Sony took the Comic Con experience to heart and the trailer that will debut this weekend is head and shoulders above the one from Comic Con. The original cut is longer at nearly four minutes and struggles at times to sell the movie as a spoof. Actually, it comes off as nothing more than a lame attempt to poke fun at Johnny Cash.

However, the svelte cut of the trailer, at only 2 and a half minutes, is a laugh riot and should play like wild fire this weekend. Mark my words, come Monday, everyone will be talking about Dewey Cox.

But don't take my word for it. Judge them for yourself. You can check out the Comic Con trailer at Slash Film below and you can find the exclusive theatrical trailer at Yahoo.

The one thing that is immediately clear from both trailers is that the real star of the movie might be White Stripes singer/guitarist Jack White as Elvis Presley. White previously had small roles in Cold Mountain and Coffee and Cigarettes.

Watch them both and tell us which one you prefer.
