No clear cut favorite in Golden Globe nominations

In a year as unpredictable as this one, it's no surprise that the nominations for the 65th Annual Golden Globes are as scattershot as they are. Atonement, starring Keira Knightley, led all movies with 7 nominations, while true story Charlie Wilson's War secured 5 nominations.

In total, 35 films were honored with at least one nomination.

One film that scored two surprise nominations was Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. While, the nod for Best Original Song for "Walk Hard" isn't too much of a stretch, John C. Reilly's turn as a musical icon garnered him a much deserved nomination for Best Actor, Comedy or Musical despite the blatant attempts by the film's producer to make light of the nomination process with their hilarious "For Your Consideration" ads (see right).

Another interesting twist for the night will be 77 year old actor/director/composer Clint Eastwood competing against Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder in two categories (Best Original Song and Best Original Score).

Of course, the real question in light of the ongoing writers' strike is whether there will even be an awards ceremony at all. With the SAG awards getting a special waiver, it seems likely that other major awards shows will also get the same treatment, but it remains to be seen.

As it stands, the Golden Globes are scheduled to be handed out live on NBC on January 13th, 2008.
