Cooter's Watch List: The best film that I've seen this year...

It's been a hot minute since we had an official Cooter Watch List, but it didn't really seem appropriate while the site was down. Yes, I know that the site is technically still down. Yes, I know that I'm still talking to myself and it's really getting creepy at this point, but I promise the end is near.

Well, the new beginning is near. The end makes it sound so dire and negative as if we're never going to get this site back up. We will get it back up right?

It's getting lonely in here by myself.

This week turned out to be a great choice to bring back this weekly favorite. I really had to make some tough decisions on which films to feature in this installment. There were easily 20 films that could have made this list. The sad thing is that most of these films won't be on Netflix or at Redbox. They probably won't get much play at the big box electronics stores or grocery stores, but these are perfect for video stores.

Trust me, you'll want to seek these films out this week. Without further ado, here we go.

  • Air

Norman Reedus has enjoyed a cool second career thanks to the success of The Walking Dead and it appears that he's leveraging that popularity to seek out new work. This film looks like something right up his alley. It has a certain sci fi/horror flare to it which will showcase his and Djimon Hounsou's acting chops. It would appear that they are the only cast for a large part of the film, so it's up to them to carry the film.

  • Amnesiac

If you're curious whatever happened to Kate Bosworth, then this film should give you some answers. It looks like a take on Misery with a twist. The bed-ridden victim is played by Wes Bentley who is enjoying a bit of a renaissance this week with two interesting films.

  • Blunt Force Trauma

If you ever wondered what Fight Club would look like with guns, then this film is for you. It also reminded me a bit of Crash with the protagonists obsession with death or the thrill of evading it on a nightly basis. I'm not sure if Ryan Kwanten has been better and Mickey Rourke looks to be cast well as the sharp-shooting master. The film looks bizarre, but in that fun and interesting way.

  • Dark Places

If you liked Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, then you'll love this story from the promising young author. Charlize Theron is perfectly cast as Libby Day and the story is pretty dark and messed up. The supporting cast is strong and while it did play in theaters for a minute, it's practically direct-to-video and you won't be disappointed.

  • Final Girl

Wes Bentley returns with his second film this week although he appears to be a supporting cast member this time around. Abigail Breslin is the real star in this dark film and she looks more than up to the task. With her well-received turn in the new TV series Scream Queens, it looks like Abigail is carving a nice little niche for herself.

  • Gravy

This is the sort of film that was made for October and Halloween. James Roday (he of Psych fame) stars and directs this horror comedy which is destined to become an instant cult classic. A great supporting cast looks to all be on point and will certainly creep you out as much as impress you. If you're looking for a new film to watch with the buds for Halloween, this is it.

  • Manglehorn

It's not often that you get someone with the acting panache of Al Pacino in a film such as this. He looks to be on point to the extent that we haven't seen from him in years. He's surrounded by a great cast and the story looks compelling enough to hold your attention for the balance of the film.

  • Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

This is actually a film that I did see in theaters. It also happens to be the best film that I've seen all year. I wrote a bunch about the film back in July and I definitely recommend that you check it out as well. If you're a film buff or just enjoy a good story then this film is definitely for you. The one thing that still stands out to me is the interesting filming choices that were made. There are some unusual framing and camera setups that help to convey the films quirkiness.

  • Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!

I have a confession to make: I've never seen a single frame from a Sharknado film and I don't have plans to "fix" that any time soon. And yet, after watching this trailer, I can sort of see their appeal. I mean, you would definitely have to be in the right mood for it, but who am I to judge? If you missed the SciFi channel debut and subsequent reruns or you just HAVE to own it, then you'll be glad to know that it's now available.
