We Want A Child

This 1949 Danish melodrama opens up where most films typically end, with a marriage. Young Else and her husband are madly in love and have it all. A few years into the marriage the only thing missing in their lives is a child, but Else can't have one. Before she was married she had gotten pregnant with another man and had an illegal abortion. This left her incapable of conceiving. Her husband knows nothing of her past life. Meanwhile, Else learns of another single woman who is pregnant and the couple agree to adopt her baby. Unfortunately the pregnant girl refuses to give up her child after it is born. When this movie was released six decades ago even the mere notion of sex before marriage was taboo, and the idea of an unwed mother or the topic of abortion was scandalous. This "pro-life" motion picture created quite an uproar!
