Based on Joseph Conrad's first novel, the film follows the story of Almayer, a Dutch trader struggling to survive in Malaysia. Set at the turn of the 19th century, Almayer faces obstacles in his pursuit of a mythical gold mountain along with a scheming wife and a daughter in love with a Malay prince.
