The color and adventure of Edwardian Africa are captured in this true story of a pioneer family. In 1913 Robin Grant (David Robb) and his wife Tilly (Hayley Mills) arrive in Kenya with dreams of transforming a desolate piece of land into a profitable coffee plantation. The challenges they face are innumerable. But for their eleven-year-old daughter Elspeth (Holly Aird), East Africa is a bewitching place of exotic wildlife and ancient tribal traditions. The Flame Trees of Thika evokes her awe and wonder at this unspoiled magical world of lions, elephants and native tribes. Originally airing as a mini-series on Masterpiece Theater in 1981, the film was groundbreaking for being shot entirely on location in Kenya.
