Chicago-based media artist Deborah Stratman explores issues of enviroment, surveillance, architecture, and space in challenging, transfixing works that employ abstract and documentary elements.
This collection includes three of Stratman's films: Kings of the Sky (2004, 68 mins.), a non-narrative video piece, follows tightrope artist Adil Hoxur on a tour of the Chinese desert. In Order Not to Be Here (2002, 33 mins.), shot on 16mm at night, explores the hermetic nature of upscale communities. Noise artist Kevin Drumm performs the soundtrack. Finally, From Hetty to Nancy (1997, 45 mins.) is a portrait of a schoolgirl traveling through Iceland at the turn of the century.
